In this session we'll explore different ways of collecting data on the web including web scraping and using Python to query APIs. We'll wrap up with an introduction to the Free Music Archive, a dataset that we'll use throughout the week.

We'll explore tools and strategies for making sense of large structured datasets. We'll use OpenRefine to clean up and explore a sample dataset from the Free Music Archive, and think about what kinds of questions we could ask of this dataset.

In this session, we'll look at ways of encoding additional information within existing data. We'll learn about existing standards for data encoding, including formats for text and music.
